Civilian Marksmanship scholarship

Members of the Big Red Rifles: I want to make you aware of a scholarship opportunity that you may consider as seniors applying for college.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has released applications for its annual scholarship program for the 2014-2015 Freshman college year. The CMP offers $1,000 one-year scholarships based on merit and rifle or pistol marksmanship affiliation to current high school seniors.

CMP presented 169 scholarships last year for the 2013-2014 school year, including an applicant with a perfect score, awarded for the first time in the scholarship’s existence. Recipients hailed from JROTC schools, 4-H groups and other shooting clubs. Since 2005, CMP has awarded over $1 million in scholarship prizes.

Eligibility requirements for CMP scholarships are:

Be a U.S. Citizen.
Be of good moral character.
Have achieved a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Be a graduating high school senior.
Demonstrate acceptance to a university, college or trade school leading to a diploma or trade certification.
Qualified for CMP JROTC Service Championships.                                                    
                               OR
Demonstrate rifle or pistol marksmanship competition experience.
If you are planning on enrolling in a Military Academy you are not eligible.
Applicants must provide past and present rifle or pistol competition history, list of awards and involvements and future expectations for the sport. Those interested must also provide academic information such as GPA, test scores and a list of activities. An official transcript must also be provided.

The deadline for application submission is March 20, 2014. Scholarships may be used to pursue post-secondary education or vocational programs for the upcoming school year.

The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship at Davidson

The John Montgomery Belk Scholarship is one of our nation's most prestigious and generous undergraduate scholarships. The program is built around our belief that, as a Belk Scholar, you possess unique talents that should be recognized and nurtured.
John M. Belk '43 amassed a record of leadership and accomplishment at Davidson. Thanks to the generosity of the John M. Belk Educational Foundation, up to eight scholarship recipients are selected in every entering class.
The scholarship can provide you comprehensive funding (tuition, fees, room and board) plus study stipends, and allows you great flexibility in the on- and off-campus opportunities you choose to explore. Those experiences, paired with our academic programs, deepen your intelligence, maturity and global understanding.

STIPENDS
The Belk Scholarship provides you with two stipends, up to $3,000 each, to support intellectual, personal, and leadership development during your college years. In recent years, the stipends have been used to explore learning opportunities in this country and abroad, including:
Examining sustainable development in EU nations
Studying the Arabic language and culture in Syria
Teaching poetry analysis and writing to disadvantaged Chinese students
Interning with the Global Strategy Institute of the Center for Strategic Studies in Washington, D.C.

NOMINATION PROCESS
Guidance counselors, heads of school, or principals may nominate one candidate from each school. Our admission staff may also nominate you based on the strength of your application for admission.
To make a nomination, complete the online nomination form (preferred) or print the form (PDF) and mail it to our Office of Admission and Financial aid. Nominations must also include a recommendation letter, transcript, and school profile.

UT Dallas McDermott Scholars receive one of the nation's most generous four-year undergraduate merit awards.

Since the program’s creation in 2001, scholars have:

Bridges Program at Miami of OH

 I would like to remind you about the upcoming application deadline for Miami's Bridges program. Bridges, an overnight visit experience for high-achieving, diverse high school seniors from across the U.S., provides selected students with an in-depth look at Miami University. It also gives students an outstanding scholarship opportunity. Students who are selected for and successfully complete the program receive a $10,000 scholarship ($2,500 per year for four years) should they apply and be admitted to Miami University's Oxford campus for Fall 2014.  

To apply, students must submit the Bridges application online. Students also need to ask a school counselor to submit a recommendation. Counselors should submit an electronic recommendation for each student who is applying to the Bridges program.

College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, OH

We have an exciting scholarship opportunity for the Nashville area.  The scholarship is a Room Grant for 4 years to residents of the following counties:  Hickman, Dickson, Cheatham, Williamson, Robertson, Sumner, Trousdale, Macon, Smith, Rutherford, Cannon, Davidson & Wilson.  The Grant is equal to the cost of a double room (with roommate- $3,750).

The only stipulation for renewal is that the student remains in the Residence Hall.  This scholarship is in addition to our academic scholarships awarded upon admission to the College.  Those scholarships and the criteria can be found at :  www.msj.edu/tuition-aid/financial-aid-grants-loans-scholarships/scholarships.

All of our admitted freshmen qualify for one of these academic awards.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

If you've made a difference by volunteering in your community over the past year, you could win $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C., by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award!
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.

The program's goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past 18 years, more than 345,000 young Americans have participated in the program, and more than 100,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer efforts.

Local Honorees are selected at participating schools and organizations in November. From these winners, an independent judging organization names the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and Washington, D.C. Results are announced in early February. Then, 10 National Honorees are chosen by a panel of prominent public figures, and announced at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., in May.

Who is eligible?
Any young person who:
is in grades 5-12 as of November 5,
is a legal resident of any U.S. state or Washington, D.C.,
has engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application, and
submits a completed application to a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by November 5.
